BUILT FOR LOCAL GUIDE

Google Ads or local SEO: where should a trade business start?

Paid search can put you in front of buyers sooner. Local SEO develops useful pages and a stronger presence over time. The right starting point depends on capacity and budget.

Google Ads and local SEO can both help a trade business reach people looking for a service nearby. They work on different timescales, cost in different ways and need the same basic ingredient: a credible page that turns interest into an enquiry.

When Google Ads makes sense

Ads are useful when you need to test demand or generate opportunities while the organic presence is still developing. You can target particular services and locations, set a budget and see which search terms lead to enquiries. That control is valuable if you have capacity for a specific kind of job, such as new automatic gate installations rather than repairs.

There are two costs to plan for: the amount paid to Google for clicks and the fee to manage the campaigns. Spending more does not rescue a poor landing page. Before launching, make sure the page states what you do, where you work, why a customer should trust you and how to ask for a quote. Track forms and relevant enquiries so you can judge lead quality, not just click volume.

When local SEO makes sense

Local SEO is a longer-term investment in the site and business information people can find without clicking an ad. The work may include clear service pages, useful town coverage, project evidence, technical improvements and an accurate Google Business Profile. It also makes your offer easier to understand when people encounter your business through Maps, an ordinary search result or a web-based AI answer.

Results are not instant, and no one can promise a particular ranking. The practical question is whether your website answers the queries your preferred customers ask, then gives them enough confidence to enquire. A strong page should continue to be useful when a campaign is paused, though it still needs maintenance as your services and evidence change.

Decide from your capacity and economics

If you need enquiries soon and can budget for both management and ad spend, Google Ads can be a sensible starting point. If your website does not yet explain your main services properly, fixing that foundation may be the first priority. A business with a larger service area and enough team capacity may run Ads while building its organic presence at the same time.

Set a clear definition of a worthwhile lead before spending. For a landscape gardener, a full garden design enquiry may be worth much more than a request to mow a lawn. For an automatic gate installer, a new installation enquiry is different from a repair question. Measure those separately where possible and review the cost of useful opportunities, not just the number of submissions.

Bring both routes back to the customer

Ads and SEO should not send people into unrelated pages. Match the search to a service page that explains the work, shows proof, covers the right area and offers an easy quote request. Then compare the quality of enquiries over a realistic period and adjust the mix. The right channel is the one that helps your business win the jobs it can deliver profitably.
